Patriots Trade Richard Seymour (VIDEO)
Written by Parcbench on September 7, 2009
The New England Patriots traded Richard Seymour to the Oakland Raiders in a typically shrewd and intelligent move for the New England sports franchise. In return, the Patriots will receive Oakland’s 2011 first round draft pick which will probably end up being very valuable.
The Patriots need to get younger on defense and while Seymour has been one of the most recognizable and dominant defensive players, he is starting to get older. The New England faithful will miss him with one fan saying “This stinks, I don’t even know who half these new guys are!”
Seymour has been a stalwart in New England since being drafted sixth overall in 2001. He played on three Super Bowl winners with the Patriots, recording 39 career sacks and being selected to the Pro Bowl for five straight seasons beginning in 2002.
“From nearly the day he arrived in 2001, Richard Seymour established himself as one of our premier players for nearly a decade,” Patriots coach Bill Belichick said Sunday. “His presence has been felt as a force on the field, a respected man off it and a multiyear champion.”
