Carrie’s Revenge

Written by Ryan Anthony on September 8, 2009

carrieLast week on an episode of “On The Record,” Eliot Spitzer was referred to as “The Comeback Kid.”

If this is true, former Miss California Carrie Prejean – newly focused on fighting the Miss USA suits for her honor – is the “Comeback Kid-ette.” The 22-year-old from San Diego is bringing all guns to bear on the pageant, leveling a lawsuit against its New York-based parent organization for religious discrimination and damages two months after her firing. Carrie earned national attention and ignited a firestorm of controversy by voicing her opinions in support of traditional marriage.

Some say she went overboard in her statement. I respectfully disagree. Some claim that Carrie has to represent the people of California. She already does. Still others – such as pageant organizer Shanna Moakler – claim that opinions of that nature are not what the title stands for.

How could they not be? There’s no better representation of American values than intellectual — although I hesitate to use this word due to its having been co-opted by the left — diversity. This is a country in which everyone has the right to their own opinion, and not to be intimidated into silence.

To that effect, I propose we do away with the absurd notion that “free speech does not include hate speech.” If I ran down a list of people that have ever uttered sentiments I considered “hate” speech, and resolved that no one had or has the right to even unintentionally offend me, I’d have to withdraw into a woodsy section of Oregon; take up residence in a bomb shelter and cut it off from all communication with the outside world.

Given the level of vitriol communicated by – of all things – a Miss USA judge, who did a very poor job of representing the organization, she may just have a case against them.

Why the word “may,” you ask? Make no mistake, as a Christian I fully support Carrie in her endeavor, but there are a lot of questions as to what went on behind the scenes – some people say such a lawsuit wouldn’t even get to first base. I don’t think the 86′ing was tied to the Don’s opinion of her demeanor, after all, he should be used to women being overly dramatic. The official position of pageant officials is that Carrie didn’t make her required appearances.

But, no one yet knows the slightest thing about those “appearances” or what they were: did they try to set her up with a gig at a pride parade out of spite?

What about Playboy? Whether or not the question of a spot in that rag were pitched to Ms. Prejean, what could possibly have made the time worth wasting? From a magazine whose writers have been allowed to vomit forth drivel insinuating women with certain political views deserve to be raped, without any preliminary screening whatsoever?

Its been said a broken clock is right twice a day. With that in mind, I have to begrudgingly give credit where its due: the feminists were right all along in portraying Hugh Hefner’s spank mag as demeaning to women. Such a pursuit would have been far beneath the former Padres cheerleader.

Regardless of anything, if Carrie actually can go forward with her plan to sue the pants off these people, I hope she wins. According to Ms. Moakler’s lawyer, Mel Avanzado “Ms. Prejean’s unfortunate and bigoted statements are responsible for any public humiliation or damages that she has claimed to have suffered.”

No, Mr. Avanzado, it is unfortunate that pageant organizers have chosen to make her life hell. It is unfortunate that a bigoted judge who should have remained objective instead chose to display, on his website, Photoshops superimposing penises with Carrie’s head. That, is unfortunate.
