Carrying Connecticut

The first half of 2009 showed a 90% increase in issued Connecticut pistol permits from the same period in 2008. Furthermore, many of those issued were to women. According to journalinquirer.com, the reasons for this surge vary. Some state it’s because of high profile crimes and some say it’s due to pending tightening gun control legislation.
Regardless of what the reason, it’s about time the lawful better prepare themselves against the unlawful, both domestically and internationally. And more specifically it’s about time more women started to take their lives into their own pistol firing hands.
My mother, my aunts and their female friends were married young and, for the most part, always had a man to protect them. All right, seriously, the damsel in distress look is so 1950! Boy, how times have changed. Plenty of my male friends cower behind me when the going gets tough (or even at a scary part of a movie) – the guilty will remain nameless.
Our “foremothers” fought diligently to be looked upon as equals and we are indeed getting closer to just that. More than half of my twenty and thirty-something female friends and colleagues are single and living by themselves or with roommates, and even those in serious relationships are more often than not the bread winner in the household.
But with this added freedom, comes additional responsibility. Although nontraditional, we women must now take the drivers seat when it comes to being the leader of the pack. Women can hunt, shoot, and protect themselves as good as any man can. And, the right to bear arms gives us an added advantage against our naturally stronger would-be assailants.
So, what is really driving these Connecticut ladies to the range? I can’t say for sure, but what I do know is that it’s inspiring. We have the right to bear arms. Read that again. Women can carry a concealed weapon. This is not something we have to fight for, it’s something that we have no matter our shape, size, or social status. This means that no matter what, we can provide for and protect ourselves and our families, so what’s stopping us?
Connecticut traditionally leans towards an anti-gun stance, but these women aren’t hearing any part of that as they exercise their right to carry. The rest of us need to follow suit. And, with that said, we commend you, Chicas de Connecticut, for not biting the bullet, but rather arming yourselves with it.
