Michael Moore: Mayor of Fantasy Land

As his recent media appearances indicate, Michael Moore has tackled a topic in his most recent film that he is clueless about. Answers to simple questions about the free market are often met with bizarre answers by the rotund filmmaker. It seems clear that either Moore has no clue what he’s talking about, or he has finally packed his bags and left earth.
On a recent appearance on CNN, Wolf Blitzer asked Moore point blank “Are you a socialist? I’ll just come out and ask the question.” Moore answered “I’m a Christian. And I’m a heterosexual too, if you want to know that.” That would have been a fantastic answer had Blitzer been inquiring as to who Moore worshiped or what kind of porn he preferred (also, does the fact that someone voluntarily exchanges fluids with this man creep you out as much as it creeps me out?)
In a follow up, Blitzer asks Moore if there are any nations out there that have economic systems he likes. Moore answered that he doesn’t “think it exists yet.”
Of course it doesn’t exist yet. The debate known as the “Socialist Calculation Debate” has been attempting to come up with a solution to the question of how a nation efficiently distributes resources after jettisoning the free market price system, and it has been raging for over a hundred years. If thousands of scholars haven’t been able to come up with an acceptable answer, something makes me skeptical of Moore’s ability to.
While he might not have a specific nation’s economy in mind, if we left people like Moore in charge, the nation we would most likely resemble is Zimbabwe, where inflation reached such a point that their federal reserve bank was forced to begin printing 100 billion dollar bills before they simply chopped a dozen zeros off the price of their currency. If only Moore had been there, he could have told Mugabe that the solution to all of his nation’s financial problems had stemmed from the fact that their system hadn’t been sufficiently Christian.
Another somewhat bizarre answer Moore gave was on his recent appearance on “Real Time with Bill Maher.” After Moore spouted anti-capitalist rhetoric for a few minutes, Maher interrupted him to ask what capitalism should be replaced with. The question seems so obvious that you would think it would be repeated in every interview Moore does, but it hasn’t seemed to dawn on the geniuses in the media. After getting over the initial shock that Bill Maher was pretty ardently defending capitalism I couldn’t help but chuckle when Moore proclaimed that the solutions was to replace the Free Market with “democracy”.
Really Mike? You want to replace an economic system with a political system? Super duper answer sport! Let’s just make all capital and private property subject to political forces and drop even the pretenses of a free nation anymore. Let’s have all wage, service, and commodity prices voted on by the consumers through national referendum. We’ll call the resulting starvation level shortages and resource destroying surpluses “Mikey Holes” and “Mikey Hills” respectively.
The American people are sure to sing songs about Moore’s brilliance on the bread lines.
What Moore’s laughable nonsense leads me to believe is that he has absolutely no clue what the free market actually is. While he might have made some observations about recent events that have shaken the American economy, he hasn’t the foggiest idea of what caused them or how they can be avoided in the future. Nor does he seem to have any interest in learning when he can make millions remaining ignorant and exploiting the ignorance of millions of Americans.
I’m sure his movie will be a smashing success overseas, as unfortunately free market principals have been all but forgotten in the places that historically gave birth to them. Plus, a little America schadenfreude porn is always a valuable commodity in the old world.
In a free society, the economy is not the only area that is subject to free market forces, but so are ideas. A flaw that is inherent in this fact is that sometimes stupidity pays off, as Moore time and time again exploits a strain of mass stupidity that coincidentally strikes some people whenever he releases one of his movies.
