Real Men Never Wear…

Sometimes I am sadly reminded of how young and behind the curve America the great is. While bra burnings and domestic rights are current events here in America they are social topics of the past for other countries. While no country is perfect, and all have their own issues to face, I have to wonder when will we catch on to the sexual breakthrough as it relates to fashion and style?
In Italy, France and Japan many men are on the pulse of fashion and style; and sometimes even more so than their sexual counterparts. It is no big deal in London for a man to wear a pair of skinny jeans, and hard bottom shoes. In Japan many men effortlessly explore fashion’s parameters, and do so with ease. In France the men are known for their flamboyant affection with fashion, and their peacockesque display of style; however here in America a man’s sexuality is determined by his garments. Why? and even more important why is it even an issue?
When I walk down the street I often wonder why is so much energy invested in deducing ones sexual preference based solely on their garments? If I was to randomly select any European or Asian male, and strip him of his outfit, and dress any given American male in that same outfit here in America, home of the free, he would be considered gay. Why is that? And why does it matter?
With so many other issues to address why do we spend so much wasted energy on belittling someone predicated on what they are wearing or are not wearing? We are behind many countries in their freedom of expression as it relates to fashion and personal style.
If we can not get over this hump how can we truly self title ourselves home of the free? That title should read “home of the free as long as you conform.”
