The Ladies Room: Put Your Best Face Forward
Written by Kristyn Ostman on October 5, 2009
On a search for random YouTube hilarity, I stumbled upon the videos of self-taught make-up artist Lauren Luke. She is officially one of my new favorite things.
She does a series of step-be-step make-up tutorials. However, she’s not your regular YouTube personality showing you things you already know, she takes her looks directly from music videos.
Ever want to know how to get Paramore’s Haily Williams’ smokey eye and red lips? She’s going to break it down. During the tutorials she reveals shortcuts, tricks and careful explanations in her enviable British accent.
If you’re not comfortable looking like Lady Gaga by day, she’s got dozens of playlists on her YouTube (panacea81) channel dedicated to a range of styles from daily wear to bridal looks.
She is my hero.
In addition to do-it-yourself makeovers, she provides great tips on products. (My next purchase will be Maybelline Colossal Volum’ Express Mascara.) During each tutorial, she’s clear on what products she’s working with and provides feedback about the quality. On top of everything else, she’s got her own line ByLaurenLuke sold at Sephora and a sassy guidebook titled Looks.
What I most enjoy about her lessons is that she is completely charming. It’s like having a friend coach you through Lipliner 101 at a slumber party. I’m dedicated to my black eyeliner and smokey shadow look. I can get it on in ten minutes before work, but now I find myself getting creative. After trying out one of her daily wear suggestions, I had people immediately commenting on how beautiful my eyes looked. Check out one of her videos and get inspired!
