Yankees and the Playoffs

Written by Michael Genovese on October 9, 2009

The Yankees are back in the playoffs. Last year at this time the Bronx wasn’t burning. As a matter of fact it wasn’t doing anything at all. This year is quite different. There is a new ballpark on 161st street and it was jumping last night. Finally Derek Jeter and the boys were back where they belong, playing baseball in October.

The new Yankee Stadium proved to be just as friendly as the old one last night as the Yankees won the game 7-2. They may just have to start calling the new stadium the “House that Jeter Built.” The Yankee Captain lifted a two run homerun to left field, his first to that side of the park all year, to tie the game at 2. As could be expected the home run sent the crowd into a roar. CC Sabathia shook his post season demons by pitching 6 and 2/3 innings of 2 run baseball. In fact, if not for a passed ball by Jorge Posada CC was near flawless all night long. CC had this to say following the game. “This is what you come here for — to have a chance to win and pitching in the postseason, playing in October,” No one could have said it better. When you come to the New York Yankees you had better be ready to play your best in the playoffs. That is what these fans expect and deserve.

Alex Rodriguez also shook some playoff ghosts himself. It probably helped that his smoking hot girlfriend Kate Hudson was in the house. A-Rod had 2 RBI in the game shaking a 0-50 effort with runners in scoring position in the playoffs. That streak dates back to the 2004 American League Championship Series vs. the Red Sox. In order for the Yankees to be successful throughout the playoffs they need A Rod to perform.

The Yankees came out and got a big win and they look to do it again on Friday when AJ Burnett takes the hill against the Twins. New York City is dying for a winner. It has been 9 years (2000 vs. the Mets) since the Yankees took a ride through the “Canyon of Hero’s.” could this be the year? With their pitching and their extremely talented bats it just may be the year they take home championship number 27.
