Why Tebow’s Concussion is News

Written by William Surrette on October 10, 2009

tim-tebowTwo weeks ago, Tim Tebow, the University of Florida’s star quarterback, got tackled while playing against Kentucky. The hit resulted in Tebow’s first ever concussion. He’s been sidelined ever since, and it’s unclear as to whether he will be playing tonight against LSU. ESPN and other sporting news programs have been covering the story nonstop. Why is it a big deal? Because Tim Tebow might just be the best college football player of our time.

As a sophomore he won the Heisman Trophy and a national championship. Last year, as a junior, he came in third place for the award and won another national championship. He elected to remain in college for his senior year so he could lead the first ever college football three-peat and become only the second player in history to win the Heisman twice (Archie Griffin). The fact that he’s still hurt after two weeks is staggering. He is Florida’s offense. He runs, he throws, he leads—there may be talent around him, but to be quite honest, Florida owes its recent success to Tebow.

Furthermore, this concussion likely ruined his shot at the Heisman, as to whether or not he plays tonight, he will not be the dominant player everyone knows he is. Or he might be and this will be one of the best stories in college football history. In any event, tonight’s game against LSU, a fellow SEC powerhouse, will show where Florida and Tim Tebow will go this season.

Apparently I am too drunk to understand the link above–I still hope LSU beat FA–even though Tim Tebow is the best NCAA player of the last 20 years, I still hate the gators.

Correction: Tim Tebow won the national championship his freshman year sharing time at QB with Chris Leak.

They’re looking to be the second team to win it 3 of 4 years (Nebraska won it in 94, 95, & 97). They are not looking to three-peat. LSU won in 2007. Hence all the hype around the winner of the LSU-Florida game has won the national championship the past three years.
