A Hairy Situation
Written by John Thompson II on October 14, 2009
I had the pleasure of having an in-depth conversation with a close friend of mine regarding, of all things, hair. Not so much the texture of, rather styles as they relate to age. The overall base of the decision was grounded in which styles of hair were age appropriate, or was it on a case by case individual bases?
I personally believe that hair styles are not aged based rather individual based. I do not believe that once one reaches a certain age bracket that certain hair styles are no longer acceptable; however I do believe that certain hair styles are appropriate for specific situations and positions.
My friend totally disagrees stating that “As you grow older for both men and women a shorter hair cut is more appropriate.” I could not disagree more. I personally believe that as long as one is not affected by their “hair style” then there is no need to conform to what society deems as age appropriate.
I am also cautious to not be blinded by my own stubbornness and refuse to conform to the “social norm.” Maybe my argument is selfishly rooted in the fact that I have always prided myself on not jumping on the band wagon and just going with the flow. That is not to say that I am rogue in regards to protocol and decorum. I personally feel that self expression is a characteristic that has been suppressed and looked down on as if it were an unwanted step child.
At the end of the day I suppose both sides are both right and wrong at the same time. Yes, certain hair styles are appropriate for certain age groups i.e. pig tails and mohawks; however if hair is looked at as an expression of one’s inner self then a 65 year old male with a mohawk is not as out of place as a 25 year old male with the same. Use your own judgment I say, and when in doubt, go with what you feel is appropriate for you.
After all you grew it, and it is your hair. Style it as you please!
