Staff Picks: More Great Horror Flicks
Written by Parcbench on October 29, 2009
During the month of October, we thought it would be fun if the Parcbench writing staff gave us some of their favorite horror movie picks. Any of these ought to be worth checking out if you love a good scare that doesn’t involve congress.
“Idle Hands” (1999) is my favorite horror movie, because I like horror movies that make me laugh. I suspect the reason that I love funny “horror” movies dates back to 1940 (Bob Hope’s version of “The Ghost Breakers”) and 1953 (the Jerry Lewis/Dean Martin classic “Scared Stiff”), but neither of those movies are particularly horrible thanks to the lack of blood. “Idle Hands” is a better companion to a more recent classic, “Shaun of the Dead.” Both movies take horror trends, give them a twist, and still manage to be disgusting while being disgustingly funny. In “Idle Hands,” Anton’s (played by Devon Sawa) right hand becomes possessed. Hilarity ensues, especially involving Devon’s friends (Seth Green and Elden Henson) and his love-from-afar (Jessica Alba). One of the great things about “Idle Hands” is that, while it doesn’t take itself seriously at all, it still manages to be an overtly hilarious commentary on a teenager whose evil hand has more purpose in “life” (or whatever) than he does. In that way, it takes a unique approach to the “coming of age” story because his evil hand provides Anton with an urgent reason to finally take responsibility for himself.
