Sweetin Low – What’s up with the former FULL HOUSE star?
Written by Brooke Musterman on October 29, 2009
Unfortunately, we’ve learned drug abuse is not uncommon amongst child TV stars. Stephanie Tanner is no exception. I, along with the rest of the children of the 80s and early 90s remember watching Jodie Sweetin play Stephanie on Full House; her gig from age 5-13. I’ll admit I watched with a tinge of jealousy. Now, at 27, as you might expect, she has come a long way since then.
She has married and divorced twice, had a baby girl, and battled an alcohol and meth addiction. Ironically this occurred while she was married to her first husband who was a cop.
She has just released her memoir, UnSweetined telling about her childhood years, not glossing over her drug and alcohol abuse.
As she made the transition from child to teenager, she tried desperately to prove that she wasn’t just the girl from Full House, and that she could get just as trashed as anyone else, she told Star magazine.
At the tender age of 14, she says, she started finding her self-worth in a bottle. As is often the case, alcohol is a gateway drug for more hardcore drugs, such as cocaine and crystal meth.
A true testament to the old proverb, “bad company corrupts good character,” she says, “It wasn’t so much the allure of it, but the people I was hanging out with. They didn’t look like the people in commercials with no teeth. They looked normal and had what I thought were normal lives. It didn’t seem scary.”
A past interview for People magazine with the newly married mom shows her to be very optimistic about the future. However, divorce and relapse were just on the horizon.
Her life was spinning out of control. Her lowest point, she says, was when she drove drunk with her 3 month old, Zoie in the car.
I think Jodie’s response to Chelsea Lately’s statement “growing up I always wished that I was you.” To which, Jodie responded. “Growing up, I always wished I was you.”
Though she does say that the cast was great. She was especially close to Bob Saget, in a fatherly way. He even brought her to one of his comedy gigs. Though he questioned what her parents would think about her hearing his very un-Danny Tanner-like comedy.
In hindsight, she recognizes that she wouldn’t have wanted to grow up any other way. All of her experiences, good and bad, have made her the person she is today.
