Movies Section Editor’s Film of the Week

Written by Chris Yogerst on November 3, 2009

north-by-northwest1In light of the release of North By Northwest on Blu Ray today, it is my film of the week.  Alfred Hitchcock is one of my favorite directors and as hard as it is to pick a favorite film of his, this one is mine.  Hitchcock ’s films still have audiences at the edge of their seats decades later, which only proves that he truly was the master of suspense (and mystery).  Cary Grant stars as a man wrongly accused of murder who is being chased across the country.  Hitchcock brilliantly uses confined and open spaces alike, traveling from city to countryside.  The mystery and suspenseful desperation in this film has no boundaries.  North By Northwest wouldn’t be complete without my favorite Hitchcock scene with the famous crop duster (view in its entirety below!).  I am reminded of an ad for this film on Turner Classic Movies; “When you miss your plane, that’s frustrating.  When your plane barely misses you, that’s CLASSIC!”

North By Northwest trailer narrated by Hitch himself.

Next time you watch this film, pay attention to how the hands of each character tell the story in their own way. It's brilliant.
