2012 Director Avoids Terrorist Jihad

Written by Chris Yogerst on November 10, 2009

untitledOnce upon a time Hollywood was not afraid to use America’s most passionate enemy in their films.  This, of course, would be the radical Islamic terrorists as seen in films like True Lies, The Seige, and Executive Decision.  However, in this post-9/11 world many filmmakers have been scared into leaving the Islamic terrorists out of the picture.

This fear of Radical Islam continues to bleed into Hollywood as seen in director Roland Emmerich’s newest film, 2012, which is about the apocalypse as it occurs on the Mayan calendar.

The Centre Daily Times reports:

“The man [Emmerich] who rose to fame as a cinematic escapist is an activist in real life. In Germany, he’s a strong supporter of the environmentalist Green Party. He campaigns for gay rights, and he doesn’t hide his contempt for organized religion. In 2012, the pope is buried under debris when St. Peter’s dome comes tumbling down, and peace-loving Tibetan monks are not spared by the great floods.”

Aside from being the tired run of the mill lefty (environmentalist and gay rights activist), Emmerich also hates organized religion openly.  Surprisingly, he admits to one group he certainly doesn’t want to rub the wrong way.

Emmerich says that:

“We didn’t destroy Mecca because we didn’t want to have to deal with a fatwa.”

For those who don’t know, a fatwa is a ruling in the Islamic faith that is capable of administering a jihad (it’s basically a mob hit).  Therefore, Emmerich would fear for his own life if he demolished Mecca in his new film.  But what does this mean?

It means that it is okay to offend any faith except Islam.  More correctly, the terrorist scare tactics have worked.  No other religion will think less about giving a death sentence.  Emmerich has every right to leave Mecca intact in his film.

This also makes every other religion look better.  Christians, Jews, Mormons, and virtually every other faith outside Islam can get offended without issuing a Godfather-esque hit on the offender.  Some people were recently appalled by an episode of Curb Your Enthusiasm where Larry David accidentally pees on a picture of Jesus.  Christians should be proud that they only get upset and don’t instead leave the house roaming for blood.

While 2012 will most certainly leave many of certain faiths offended by the destruction of their respective holy objects, they can rest knowing that Emmerich’s films will probably never impress most critics.  His films are generally more mindless than the words coming from the mouth of White House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs.  Also, Emmerich can rest knowing those he offended aren’t lurking around the corner holding a suitcase bomb.

2012 apocalypse conspiracy is a joke! …and so is Emmerich, he would be better off if he directed another Jean Claude Van Damme vehicle!!

Chris Yogerst,

What is "Radial Islam"? Does it have to do with a radius or something?

The typo is fixed…good catch, thank you. However, your condescending sarcasm is not necessary as everyone makes errors sometimes.

Roland Emmerich and Uwe Boll would truly be a match made in Hell.
