Movie Section Editor’s Film of the Week

tropicthunderBen Stiller has long been one of my favorite comedic talents.  From his hilarious role in the kids film Heavyweights to the brain dead model in Zoolander, everything he does makes me laugh!!  Stiller is usually at his best when he directs, which is why Tropic Thunder is my favorite film of his as well as the Parcbench movie of the week.

On its surface, this film mocks the making of the epic war film Apocalypse Now.  The production took years and was full of setbacks including hurricanes and drug induced actor meltdowns.  It is all chronicled in the documentary Hearts of DarknessTropic Thunder takes this story and uses it to poke at the absurdities of Hollywood actors and their surrounding culture.  They are on the set of a war film when they encounter one problem after another and eventually become the soldiers they were portraying.

Even before Tropic Thunder hit theaters, it had its share of controversy.  Once word got out the Robert Downey Jr. was playing a black man phrases like “minstrel show” and “black face” started to surface.  Anyone who has seen this film knows that the purpose of this was to show the outrageous and silly nature of many actors who take themselves too seriously (“I don’t break character until the DVD commentary”).  Kirk Lazarus (Downey Jr.) provided a hilarious take on the stereotypical Black soldier which was contradicted by Alpa Chino (Brandon T. Jackson).

Stiller played the typical action hero, Tugg Speedman, who had his series of films that went on longer than necessary (Scorcher 1-6).  He is the token sissy actor who plays tough guys but couldn’t be further from one in real life.  Jack Black brilliantly played the drug addict actor with no appreciation for what he has.  His claim to fame is the Fatties franchise that satirizes many of Eddie Murhpy’s tragically awful films of recent years.

There are so many funny characters in this film (including roles by Danny McBride, Nick Nolte, Bill Hader, and Steve Coogan).  It would take too long to mention them all in detail so if you haven’t seen this film, GO SEE IT!  What most people I know talk about, however, is Tom Cruise’s brilliant cameo appearance as a prick studio head.  For more see the video below.

Here is the film’s trailer (it speaks for itself!)

"I know who I am…I'm the dude, playin' a dude…disguised as another dude!"

while Tropic Thunder, Zoolander & Reality Bites are 3 of my favorite movies, I'm pretty sure the world could do without all the awkward attempts that provide filler in The Stiller Legacy. Selective laughter speaks volumes in taste. And the fact that Along Came Polly, The Heartbreak Kid, Duplex & Mystery Men all kept you in stitches definitely limits the weight of your proposals. But those that can't do write huh?

  • Nick Anderson

Those who can't do write, and those who can't write troll the internet from their parent's basement poking at people under a stupid alias.

      not necessarily.

  • Chris Yogerst

HAHA, good call Nick!! "assume_away," your cynicism towards me is unwarranted. Of course Stiller's films vary in quality, but there is nothing wrong with having an appreciation for the man. There are films of his I don't care much for (I used the term "everything" loosely) but I don't focus on those for the movies of the week. I decided to highlight my favorite one, so judge me on the fact that I like Tropic Thunder.

Everything isn't a loose term. I highly doubt, judging by the comment volume in this section alone, that you can afford to bully your patrons for their polite opinions. I apologize if I misjudged you, what film projects are you currently or have you recently worked on?

    • Mark Baker

As if your initial comment was polite…what credentials do you have to be attacking someone's personal pick of a film of the week…who cares???

      Gotta love the trolls PB!!!

Actually Mark, I make films as opposed to sitting back and judging the hard work and artistic visions of people who believe in something rather than find their importance through a 3rd person mock existence. I think it's fair to assume that if someone stays in school longer than Van Wilder that they're afraid of abandoning their comfort zone, the crash course, or hand holding offered there in. And it would be a personal pick, if this were a social network, or he were not The Film Editor. Also, (again) I didn't attack the pick…I merely suggested that beginning with a biased assertion hardly affords the reader any confidence in the specific suggestion. That point is valid enough, which is perhaps why it is consistently misunderstood. Unless, you are Chris as well. Alias indeed.

            yessir, lmao

  • Goodison Park

I think Stiller is lame, his comedy is uneven at best, and he’s never the star of any scene. Merely a lame duck waiting to be eclipsed by comedic actors that have timing, delivery, etc, etc. At least with Tropic Thunder you have actors around him, like Jack Black and a brilliant Robert Downey Jr. picking up the slack when Stiller himself often fails.

And does everything include Night at the Museum? Because I have to agree with Assume_Away in that you should def reword next time.

Instead of picking on someone nice enough to leave a comment that is.

    :)
