Critics and fans alike expressed outrage over the blatant omission of Ed Begley, Jr., from the Academy Awards tribute to actors who died in the past year.

Begley’s family said they were beyond tears.

“How could they include Michael Jackson and not my little Ed?!” said Mrs. Begley, “He was in so many more high quality movies, like, um, that one with the guy who did stuff.”

Academy Awards officials defended their decision, based on the fact that Ed Begley, Jr., is actually alive.

“We felt it necessary to omit Mr. Begley, Jr., in favor of feature more stars who are physically dead,” said Bruce Davis, who was in charge of the Academy’s memorial segment, “Ed may be dead inside and doomed to a lifelong career in crappy census commercials, but he still has a pulse. That’s more than Don Knotts can say these days. Boy do I miss Don Knotts.”

Maybe of Begley Jr.’s peers refused to believe reports that he was still alive, due in part to Begley Jr.’s complete immersion in the “green lifestyle.” Begley, Jr. refuses to buy anything made out of plastic, leaving a cup and string as his only form of telecommunication.

“Look, all I know is that I haven’t gotten a call from Ed Begley, Jr. in twelve years,” said Martin Mull, “If he’s not dead, than he’s in some kind of state similar to death – like being on Hollywood Squares.”

Davis conceded that he had considered Begley, Jr., but he felt Begley, Jr.’s remarkable television work on St. Elsewhere would be better honored at the TV Academy’s Emmys. According to Davis, “Begley, Jr.’s movie career peaked after his role in This is Spinal Tap.”

Critic Roger Ebert agreed.

“Ed put his heart and soul into that performance as John ‘Stumpy’ Pepys,” said an unsettling, disturbing, freakish voice simulation of Roger Ebert, “After that, he must have died in some kind of freakish accident with a food dehydrator, because I didn’t notice a f**king thing from him after that. I also like to wear women’s clothing.”

The Academy ultimately apologized for the omission, but defended the inclusion of Michael Jackson.

“Ed Begley Jr. was in Santa With Muscles,” said Davis, “That makes Michael Jackson’s performance in Captain EO look like Laurence f**king Olivier in comparison.”

Begley was unavailable for comment because he was busy humping the planet.

Thanks to an email message sent by a producer of “The Hurt Locker” (asking voters to vote for his low-budget indie film over a certain $500 million budget 3-D contender), there is at least some drama in the contest for “Best Picture.” Word around Hollywood is that there might be a backlash vote against “Hurt Locker” for this, but I think that is just the usual Hollywood attempt to make a story when one doesn’t exist. Since most of the voters’ ballots were mailed in by last Tuesday at 5pm, the backlash will be minimal. By then most of the Oscar voters already voted for all their friends and mailed their ballots in. Besides, how many of the voters would listen to anything a producer has to say?

But at least it gave the press something to write about. The biggest unreported story for this years Academy Awards is that there aren’t many actual movie stars left in Hollywood… and there are even fewer nominated for a performance this year. Remember just a few years ago, when you could see stars like Clint Eastwood, Judi Dench, William Hurt, Maggie Smith, Paul Newman, Jon Voight, Cate Blanchett, Denzel Washington, Julia Roberts, Dustin Hoffman, and Meryl Streep on the red carpet? Well, some things in the universe apparently never change, so you will still get to see Meryl Streep show up for her 16th nomination. But other than that, you will have to settle for the likes of Vera Farmiga, Carey Mulligan, Jeremy Renner, Gabourey Sidibe, Christoph Waltz, and Anna Kendrick. Who, you ask? Exactly. It is no accident that this is the final year that Barbara Walters is putting together her famous “Oscar Special.” She can’t be expected to profile these non-stars forever, can she? I mean, is there anyone in Hollywood that we don’t hear enough about? OK, Jack Nicholson… I’ll give you that. Then again, maybe that’s precisely why he’s such a bona fide star.

At this year’s Academy Awards, neither of the two front-runners (“Avatar” and “The Hurt Locker”) feature a big name star in a leading role. Sam Worthington and Zoe Saldana weren’t even nominated for their pedestrian work in “Avatar,” and Jeremy Renner (who?) probably worked for scale in “The Hurt Locker.” Of the 10 nominees for “Best Picture” there are only 3 that feature a movie star; “Up in the Air” (George Clooney), “Inglorious Basterds” (Brad Pitt), and “The Blind Side” (Sandra Bullock).

Hollywood has gotten rid of stars as much as they can. After all, one of the hosts this year is that bore from TV’s “30 Rock” Alec Baldwin. (Wait a minute – didn’t he promise to leave the country?) Thankfully, the other host is Steve Martin. So maybe the show won’t be half bad. Another plus: they finally got rid of the pathetic “Best Song” performance. We will at least be spared having to listen to five lame cover versions of songs so terrible the original recording artists usually refused to sing live in front of 36 million viewers.

Instead of real movie stars, now it is the movies that are the real stars, and this year’s expansion of the “Best Picture” category to 10 movies is just one more step toward that end. Let’s not forget that last year neither of the biggest box-office draws (“The Dark Knight” and “WALL-E”) drew a “Best Picture” nomination. So this year, the Academy decided to expand the list in a lame attempt to artificially boost ratings by rewarding mediocre, but extremely popular movies. This will go down in Oscar history as the year that 10 films were nominated in a year that there weren’t even 5 truly great films that deserved to be nominated. If that isn’t Hollywood for you, I don’t know what is.

The film that most deserves to be called 2009’s “Best Picture” is “The Hurt Locker.” I predicted the nomination and director Kathryn Bigelow’s win in my review last July, and I stand by that still. “The Hurt Locker” is an important and powerful film focused on the war in Iraq. The only film that could conceivably stage an Oscar coup is James Cameron’s “Avatar.” But for those of us that remember already seeing “Star Wars” and its sequels, we can still hope that the original screenplay of “The Hurt Lock” shocks and awes “Avatar” to oblivion on Oscar night.

What was originally reported as a disappearance, has turned in to what every one was dreading. His body was found around noon today in Stanley Park, in Vancouver. As I was writing my original article, I didn’t want it to be what I feared. All the signs were there – the history of depression, giving away his possessions, the note.

He had lived a full life after Growing Pains. He continued to act and produce on TV and on stage.

“Just last year, Koenig appeared alongside Andy Richter in a video promoting the one-year anniversary—or, as he put it, “12 months of internety goodness”—of Koenig’s website, MonkeyGoLucky.com. Not short of concerned friends, Sarah Silverman, Alyssa Milano, Dave Holmes, Kevin Smith and good pal Doug Benson have all been tweeting about Koenig’s disappearance.”

He was an activist for many causes. Protesting the 2008 Olympics in China landed him in jail.

But he will forever be Boner in our hearts. He will definitely be missed.

This is particularly traumatic for me. As a middle schooler, watching Growing Pains, I remember having a crush on Boner.

Just to provide a little comic relief, in this very tragic situation, you can probably imagine the research process for this article. Just try Googling any phrase with the word “Boner” in it. In doing so, my computer crashed.

I had to use my less-than-helpful, but dreamy boyfriend’s computer, who had all sorts of disrespectful title suggestions for this article.

Andrew, who resided in California was last seen in Canada, where he was visiting some friends. He was supposed to fly back to California on the 16th, but never made the flight.

His father, Walter Koenig who played Chekov on Star Trek, said on his website, that his he had received a letter from his son which said, that he “wasn’t going to work anymore,” he told KABC that his son had “been depressed.”

It sounds as though Koenig was planning to stay in Canada. There is speculation that he may have moved to Vancouver to “start over,” and is remaining inconspicuous for the time being. A friend told the Daily News that Andrew Koenig turned down multiple job offers and cleared out his Venice Beach, California home before leaving. He left a bag with a book and other personal items on the friend’s doorknob.

According to Fox news, since the disappearance was made public, last Thursday, the Vancouver Police Missing Persons Unit has received “a substantial amount of tips and sightings. For instance, he was sighted at a bakery in south Vancouver. Police are hopeful that he’s still alive. They say Koenig’s ATM card and cell phone records indicate that they were used up until his last sighting.
There has been no activity on either account since then. In the meantime, Police are wishing that Koenig would throw them a bone as to his whereabouts.

Even though that appears to be the word du jour to describe him, I personally always thought him to be more of a tool. To be honest, I never really judged or thought about him that much, but the recent hype surrounding his Playboy interview made me curious as to if he really is, in fact, a tool.

Or a douche for that matter.

One of the highly controversial items from his interview is his use of the taboo (in some circles) N word. I will admit right now that I am not going to spell the N word out, for fear of being napalmed. I will say, in his defense, he didn’t use it in a derogatory way. He was pointing out how preposterous it was that he couldn’t use the word. So, on this count, I agree with him.

But when he went on to enlighten the world as to how his brain thinks black women are attractive but his penis doesn’t I began to cringe. I suppose he could possibly get points for being honest, but good lord, Man! There are some things better left unsaid, especially when they are transcribed to print. The interview continues and is pretty evenly paced between genuinely nice comments about Jennifer Aniston, grappling with fame and tons of information about sex and his masturbation habits.

Of course, the sex stuff is getting the most headlines, as John Mayer knew it would. He purports to be so upset that people think he’s a jerk when really he’s just a nice guy who respects and loves women. And he seems to have sincerely liked the women he’s dated. But he boo-hoos about being misunderstood and then says, in reference to dating Jessica Simpson, “It was like napalm, sexual napalm.” That, in and of itself is kind of a hot (pun intended) compliment.

But then he digs the hole deeper and goes on about how Simpson made him want to quit the rest of his life so he could basically consume her and wallow in her. And he didn’t say any of that lyrically. “Sexual napalm” now that’s a pretty creative metaphor. The rest of his Simpson comments were not. He likened her to a high priced hooker.

My verdict is in. John Mayer is not a tool. He suffers from the very self- absorbed critical condition known as verbal diarrhea.

He doesn’t know when to stop talking and just shut up.

When his first hit came out, “Your Body is a Wonderland,” females across the country collectively sighed. I do not own the song (nor any of his others) but I admit I like it in a big, goofy, romantic way. He hit the nail on the head. All women want their men to think this about them. And to be fair, all men probably want the same to be thought of them. In fact, most people I know would love to be ‘sexual napalm’ in the eyes of their partners – but we don’t necessarily want that little ditty in print. Some things are better when they are respectfully private.

When hemmed in by time, meter, the need to rhyme and be radio-friendly, John Mayer can turn a sexy phrase. When babbling to a journalist, not so much.

Calling Jessica Simpson sexual napalm is just a crass tell-all iteration of his first hit single. Perhaps he’s a one-note/topic songwriter, but a feminine hygiene product?

Nah.

Of course, this is all assuming that he meant sexual napalm as a compliment, as opposed to literally. While I am pretty sure he meant to sing Jessica’s praises, I suppose he could have meant that she caused him major burning sensations in which case I would advise Mr. Mayer to douche.
